Sign the Change.org petition

Let’s take this a step further and stand against sending any student to jail for missing school. Not only does research show that secure detention has critical, long lasting, negative consequences for youth and the community (read: it does much more harm than good), I think it is just common sense that keeping kids out of their school does not facilitate school attendance. It should be well known that shock sentences are ineffective and can lead to increased delinquency.

This honors student is gathering well-deserved support and outcry from the public. I encourage anyone outraged over this judge’s decision to extend that outrage towards state laws that allow for the secure detention of kids who miss school. Some states forgo the use of evidence-based best practices and federal funding to lock up kids with too many absenses. Secure detention for these kids needs to end. Continue the fight against this harmful practice by signing the petition requesting the judge to cancel this honor student’s fine and sentencing, then become involved in eliminating secure detention for kids who miss school in all states.

The Memorial is a unit of National Mall and Memorial Parks. Awed by its beauty and diversity, early 20th-century visionaries donated the land that became Acadia National Park. The park is home to many plants and animals, and the tallest mountain on the U.S. Atlantic coast.
